Fuschia Group is a small profitable organisation that runs in Fuschia Crescent, Jim Fouche Park, Welkom. We provide IT services and support to all of the family’s that live in the crescent. We started off as a small network with 3 computers, 1 printer and a dial up line. Due to recent expansion we have upgraded to three servers two running Windows Server 2003 Standard edition,  and the other running a Linux SME (small medium enterprise) server package. The Windows server provides file hosting and back up so that we can ensure users files are never lost. There are also shares allocated to DVD’s, Music and pictures which users have access to. The SME server hosts a domain controller to process log-on commands and logon scripts.  Each user has a username and password which keeps the network secure and controlled. Users only have access to there own work and shares defined by the network administrator. We have a shared ADSL line which allows users to be connected to the outside world, browse websites and send and recieve E-mail. Users also recieve 5 free E-Mail address hosted by Google Apps for Domains on the @fuschiagroup.co.za domain. The network is wired and has two access points for wireless clients. We currently have 5 homes connected to our network. 2009 is the year for expansion. We are hoping to expand to reach another 5 homes by the end of this year.

The long awaited Microsoft Windows XP service pack 3, has finally been released. The service pack include all the updates from SP 2 until the date SP3 was published. Why should I download and install this? Well the answer is quite simple. SECURITY. With every piece of software that is written there will be some errors in the code. By downloading and installing updates this ensures that the “known” errors are fixed and the back door is closed. What is a service pack. A SP is a piece of software that contains a collection of operating system updates and some new programs. For example the SP may contain the latest windows media player or Internet explorer. A service pack is a must have. Download XP SP 3  from Microsoft by clicking on this link. Alternatively you can turn on your Windows Updates and it will eventually download and install itself.

Also known as ADSL has recently touched our users hearts with the fast access speeds and the always on connection. With the new addition we welcome a new world of entertainment, social networking, instant email, 24/7 news. But there is always a but. In this wonderful world we live in we have thoses people by the names of hackers, crackers, and the melicious users. Due to this network security has stepped up a notch. Anti Virus programs have to be monitored and updated all the time. Gateways and hardware firewalls have had to be installed. This was all done on easter morning just before the guests arrived for lunch.

Please remember that with new toys, new experiences there is always someone out there who would love to come in and steal from you. Therefore security should be every IT managers top priority.
